StopAs cheap discount travel is now on a surge to any International airport city, then Frankfurt is a must.

Germany’s capital has been moved from Bonn back to Berlin, but it is still the industrial city of Frankfurt that you are most apt to fly into. More international flights land there than at any of the other airports in the country.

Munich and Berlin draw more tourists, so Frankfurt may not be your ultimate destination in Germany, but it’s worth a visit. You have two choices on arrival. Go into the city for a day or two to get over jet lag and see the sights, or immediately get out of town.

To get out of town, you can rent a car and easily get to the Rhine and Mosel areas of Germany. The Romantic Road isn’t far away. You can fly on to another destination, or you can catch a train from the airport into town and get almost anywhere from the huge 19th century railway station in town.

Like many cities in Germany, Frankfurt was bombed during WW II, and nearly all of its old half-timbered buildings were destroyed. The city was rebuilt with a mixture of modern and traditional architecture. Some of the old buildings were faithfully restored.

You can take a leisurely day to explore the old town — the Altstadt. It’s a great way to get over jet lag and still get something out of your first day on a trip. Before WW II it was a great historic town, and with the rebuilding, there are still historic things to see. See the Gothe Haus, the birthplace of the 18th century writer Gothe.

The Romerberg area is the historic center of the Alstadt. There are three old houses connected together that are called the Romer. These houses were originally built in the 13th century. About a century after they were built, they were bought by the city, interconnected, and used as the city hall — the Rathaus.

On the second floor is the Imperial Hall — the Kaisersaal which you can visit on a tour. The wonderfully elaborate front of the Romer overlooks the Romerberg Square — Romerplatz. There are many other reconstructed half-timbered houses in the area.

You can’t miss the Church St. Bartholomaus which is also in the Altstadt. This church is sometimes referred to as the Dom (the cathedral), but it isn’t truly a cathedral. The main construction was from the 13th to the 15th centuries.

It was destroyed during WW II but resorted to it’s former glory. There is one altar remaining from the church’s original interior called the Altar of Mary Sleeping - the Maria Schlafaltar. It was carved in the 15th century.

One interesting fact is that in the 14th century, the Dom was selected to be the electoral site for the kings of the Holy Roman Empire. Several coronations took place here. In the Dom Museum you can see some of the robes of Imperial Electors. Some date from the 14th century and give you an idea of how ornate they were.

There are several museums on the south bank of the Main River. The most important art museum is the Stadel Museum. It contains paintings from most eras of European painting from early Flemish and Dutch masters, to German painters to Impressionists. Other museums are nearby, and this south bank of the river is sometimes referred to as the Museum Embankment.

Most of what you probably want to see can be reached on foot. Nearly all the tourist type sights are within the old town walls. You can get around Frankfurt by subway, trams and buses. Consider a Frankfurt Card - Frankfurter Tageskarte - which will get you on public transportation and into museums.

So when you fly into Frankfurt Airport, consider spending a day in the city. It might just surprise you with what it has to offer.

But anyway, there are so many more amazing cities to visit by taking advantage of current cheap discount travel deals available. Budget Travel Tips for Making Hotel Reservations

Posted by admin | Posted in Budget Travel, Travel Budget Tips | Posted on 15-10-2009

StopIf you’ve decided you will be more comfortable on your holiday with hotel reservations in hand but also need budget travel, then you’re going to have some decisions to make. How are you going to get those reservations? Let’s look at the options.

You could use a travel agent. If you’re planning a trip to an exotic location, this might be your best bet. Travel agents know the hotels and lodging in the areas of their expertise, and they can give you good guidance and advice for budget travel.

You could use one of the big Internet booking agencies. Those can help you get pretty good deals. It’s worthwhile to check two or three of them to see how they rate different hotels, so you’ll get what you want. Whenever you’re looking at hotels and bed-and-breakfasts on the Internet, remember, any place can look good with some creative photography.

We recommend avoiding the companies that don’t tell you the name of the hotel until after you make your reservation. Also remember that when hotels are tied to booking agencies, they lose a cut to that agency. You might be just as well off booking directly with the hotel.

It pays to find a good budget travel guide. If you like their philosophy, you will probably like the hotels they recommend. You can call the hotel directly. Chances are you will be able to talk to someone who speaks English. You can contact almost all of them over the Internet these days, either by e-mail or by contacting them through their own web site.

Although budget travel tips are on top of the agenda, you need to take so many other points into consideration to avoid a disappointing vacation, so make a note of the following guidelines…

If you e-mail the hotel directly, tell them the number of rooms you want and how many people per room. They will need to know the date of your arrival and the date of your departure… so the number of nights you will be staying.

Remember that in most places in the world, dates are written with the day/month/year, not with the month/day/year as it is in the U.S. To avoid confusion on any continent, we write the month out rather than using numbers.

Once you hear back from them, if they have a room at the price you want, accept the reservation. You may have to send your credit card number. We’re reluctant to send our credit card number in e-mail. You can call and give them your credit card number.

If you have used the hotel’s own site to contact them, make sure it is a secure site before you send your credit card number to them that way.

Be sure to read the hotel cancellation policies carefully before you make a reservation.

If you make hotel reservations with one of the big travel booking sites or with the hotel itself, beware of non-refundable reservations.

When you make your hotel reservations, you will receive a confirmation by e-mail. Print it, and take it with you. Don’t delete the original e-mail until you have completed your trip, and you know you have been billed correctly.

If your travel dates are firm, you’ll find that to get into the most popular and best value hotels, it’s worthwhile to make those hotel reservations ahead.

Stretch Your Travel Budget By Sleeping Cheaper

Posted by admin | Posted in Travel Budget Tips, Travel Tips | Posted on 08-10-2009

StopWhen the global economy takes a downturn, learn a few tricks to stretch your travel budget.

If your Dollar or Euro doesn’t seem like it goes as far, should you just forget traveling? We don’t think so. Travel gives you a boost. You just have to travel a little smarter. You might cut a few corners so you can eat and sleep cheaper, but you can still have a great trip. How can you travel more frugally?

To stretch your travel budget in Europe, stay in a bed-and-breakfast. It will probably cost you less than even the cheapest hotel in town. You’ll get a friendly host who can probably tell you where to eat great food for less, and the only downside is you might be a ten minute walk from the center of town.

If you can’t find a convenient bed-and-breakfast, stay in a hotel with fewer stars. This will be your cheaper option in the U.S. If you check them out before you take the room, you can get a real bargain…. they may have a lowly one or two stars only because they don’t have a restaurant, or an elevator. Some small family run places can be as cozy and friendly as a bed-and-breakfast.

If you’re going to stay in a city for a week or more, consider a short-term apartment rental. They have small kitchens, so you can shop at local stores and eat in, saving on restaurant meals. They are often no more than a moderate priced hotel room. In the U.S. you can prepare meals in your room if you get a motel with a kitchenette.

Negotiate with hotels. Room rates generally follow the ecomony. If economies around the world are sinking… so are room rates. No matter if it’s a bed and breakfast, a cheap hotel or one with more stars, don’t accept the first price they quote you.

Ask if there are any discounts or if it will be cheaper if you stay more nights. This works especially well if you are at their door, and they are not full for the night. They want to fill that room, and they might as well entice you with a good deal.

Don’t succumb to a nightcap from the minibar. Snacks and drinks are always more expensive from the minibar. If you think you might have the midnight munchies, stop at a convenience store or a local shop and pick up a few items.

If you’re really counting your pennies, doing your laundry in the hotel sink is a great way to stretch your travel budget. Hotel laundry services can be expensive. Some motels in the U.S. have coin operated washers and driers on the premises. Who wants to spend time in a laundromat when you could be sightseeing?

If your hotel doesn’t include breakfast in the price of the room, you will probably save money venturing out to a local corner cafe rather than paying the price for the hotel breakfast buffet.

If you watch the way you eat and drink, and you’re smart about where you sleep, you can stretch your travel budget, so you don’t have to stay too close to home.
