After traveling for many years, we know there are many ways to travel. We understand that each of you will be traveling for different reasons and have different goals and experiences in mind.

You can let your conscience be your travel guide and choose Ethical Travel or Responsible Travel. There’s Green Travel or Eco-Tourism or Sustainable Travel. All of these can be active travel or slow travel… but you choose to travel in a style that is good for the earth and the cultures you are visiting.

You can also choose to help scientific projects or help in communities with Volunteer Tourism. Many people feel more fulfilled if they help scientists with wildlife counts or uncovering archeological treasures. Others help build houses in communities hit by natural disasters or in developing counties. There are organizations that take volunteers to disadvantaged areas to provide medical care.

You can travel for the thrill of it with Adventure Travel or Active Travel… trekking or hiking, mountain climbing, rock climbing or white water river rafting.

You can travel to learn about other people with Cultural Travel. Or you can travel to further your education. Students can choose semesters or summers abroad. Those of us a little older can choose Cooking Schools or programs like Elder Hostel.

There’s even a relatively new type of travel called Medical Tourism. People travel to foreign countries for everything from face lifts to heart surgery in hopes of saving money and getting a trip all at the same time. That’s not something we endorse, but it’s certainly a fast growing segment and a new way to travel.

When it comes to finances, there’s budget travel and luxury travel. You can choose a road trip or a backpacking trip. You can fly, cruise, go by rail or bus or car. You can travel point to point on your own, or have reservations and all expenses paid. You’d be hard pressed to find a prettier setting for a capital city than Stockholm, Sweden. With one third of the city’s area made up of waterways, it seems like it is part of the sea… and seafaring is certainly in the Swedish blood.

It’s a city that spreads over 14 islands, but you only need to visit three or four of them to get a real feeling for this Nordic capital. The sea that Stockholm sits next to is the Baltic, but it is actually built on Lake Malaren which flows into the Baltic.

Norrmalm is the downtown area. The combined train and bus station is there. You’ll find lots of hotels and shopping on this island. It’s a convenient place to stay, and it’s within walking distance to Gamla Stan.

Gamla Stan is the Old Town. It’s a colorful, well preserved tangle of winding, cobble-stoned streets lined with restaurants, antique stores and tourist shops. It’s anchored by the Royal Palace. You’ll spend much of your time just wandering here.

You can watch the Changing of the Guard at the Royal Palace at noon. Tour the Palace itself. You’ll find street performers or you may stumble on a school band concert like we did in the small square in front of the Nobel Museum.

Djurgarden is Stockholm’s playground, with several museums, an open air folk museum, and an amusement park. The first place you want to head is the Vasamuseet, The Vasa Museum. The Vasa is a well preserved 17th century Swedish warship.

She is really beautiful to behold, but she was a sailor’s nightmare…. having sunk 20 minutes into her maiden voyage. It was probably because she sank in those shallow, cold and brackish waters that she survived to be raised and put in this museum for us to marvel at.

Around the corner from the Vasa is an exhibit building that houses old boats including one used by the King for Royal weddings and greeting dignitaries. Also on this island is Skansen, Europe’s first open-air folk museum. Today, around 150 traditional and historic houses and buildings have been moved here from all over Sweden.

If you have time, you could visit the Nordic Museum to learn about Swedish cultural history. And for the child in you, you could visit the Tivoli Grona Lund amusement park.

Skeppsholmen is a small island stuck in the middle of these three. It’s a traffic-free park with trails and the Museum of Modern Art.

You can arrive by cruise ship right into the heart of the city or fly into Arlanda Airport. If you fly in, the fastest way to get into the city is the Arlanda Express train. It’s a little expensive, but you can get a two-for-one price on weekends. It effectively whisks you into town in 20 minutes.

The Flygbussarna, the airport bus, is half as much, but it takes longer with traffic. Airport shuttles are another alternative that will get you right to your hotel if you’re staying in Gamla Stan or away from the central train/bus station.

The Tourist Office at any point of entry will give you lots of information on where to stay, how to get into town and how to get around. They’re very helpful.

Stockholm is a city that invites wandering on foot or getting around on the water with the hop-on-hop-off sightseeing boats. You really should see it from both perspectives… land and sea… because it’s such a beautiful combination of both.

Everybody seems to be complaining about the cold at the moment, so if you are one of those people, this could be your chance to do something about it. Lisbon is an overlooked European capital. Tourists tend to flock to Paris, Rome, London, but that little country on the edge of Europe? Portugal is not always on major tourist routes, but there is plenty to see there.

If you’re looking for a trip to Europe, but you’re hoping to stick to a tight travel budget, you might want to give Lisbon a look. Portugal has always cost less than other destinations in Europe.

So what is there to see in Portugal’s capital city? Well, to start with, the city itself. It is compact and teems with everyday life. Its pleasures are its street life and setting…. Lisbon was built on seven hills, on the Tagus River where it spills into the Atlantic. It doesn’t seem overrun with tourists.

The Portuguese shop in the Chiado and Bairro Alto districts on one of the hillsides above downtown. They party and listen to fado in the alleys of the Alfama on the opposite hillside. The Bairro Alto also has a vibrant nightlife.

The Baixa, the downtown district, runs between the two hills from Rossio Square inland to Comericio Square, the large, much loved plaza on the river. It is the main shopping and banking district that stretches from the riverfront to the Avenida da Liberdade. There are elegant squares and pedestrianized streets… and lots of cafes and shops.

Lisbon has history too. It bills itself as the City of Explorers. Prince Henry the Navigator set the course for exploration in the 15th century. Vasco da Gama sailed from the the city’s Belem neighborhood. Her Glory days were the 15th and 16th centuries when she sent da Gama and other explorers out to “discover the world”.

Much of the city was rebuilt after it was flattened by an earthquake in the 18th century. The Chiado area suffered a devastating fire in the 1980s, but it has been reborn. Actually, many areas of the city have been rebuilt through the years after being flattened by earthquakes or burned by fires. Find pockets of the old grandeur in the Belem district, the Alfama, and the Bairro Alto.

Lisbon is a great city for tourists because of its compact size. Walk the downtown. Take the Santa Justa Elevator (also called the Elevator of Carmo or Carmo Lift) up to the Bairro Alto. This elevator was designed by a student of Eiffel and built in the early 1900s.

Climb back into history through the medieval alleys of the Alfama on the opposite hill. This is possibly the city’s most emblematic quarter.

Get lost winding up narrow streets with laundry hanging over them. You will find stone staircases that open suddenly onto terraces with spectacular views over the red tile rooftops to the Tagus River. Stop in little local restaurants for a bite to eat.

At night listen to real, not-for-tourists Fado here. Admire the Azulejos de Lisboa, the blue tiles that decorate nooks and crannies at every turn…. There are strategically placed miradouros (or viewpoints) that offer breathtaking panoramas over the city. At the top of the hill is the Castle of St. George (the Castelo de Sao Jorge). All that is really left is the walls, but it has a great view out over the city.

Ride the colorful old yellow trams around the city. We haven’t even had time to mention the museums like the Ancient Art Museum (which is Portugal’s National Gallery) or the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum which are two of Lisbon’s best. And since we’ve only mentioned historic Belem in passing, we’ll have to leave that for later.

Learn to connect with travel by accepting that things will be different. THAT’S WHY YOU’RE TRAVELING!!! At least we hope it is. Sorry for shouting, but we feel strongly about this.

We have met people who are traveling just so they can tick one more country off their list and impress the neighbors, but wow, what a waste not to connect with travel and really learn something.

You don’t have to be traveling on your own to connect. You can find ways to learn about local customs and people if you’re on a tour.

Ask questions… don’t be shy. If you’re strolling through a local market in Borneo, and you don’t know what that fruit is…. ask. People love to share their culture with you if you show an interest. You might even end up with a taste… though if it’s durian you might want to pass.

Talk to local workers instead of just taking pictures of them. On the waterfront of Dubai Creek, we wanted to take pictures of the old wooden dhows. My hubby started chatting with the dock workers. Next he was helping them load boxes onto the dhows, and we were talking politics…. The American tourists making friends with the Iranian and Pakistani dock workers! We were having fun, and they now had a slightly better view of Americans.

Instead of rushing in and out of a famous church before the service begins, linger and listen. In Munich one time, we were about to leave a church because the service was ready to start, but a local invited us to stay for something “Frei”. We weren’t sure what it was, but it was free. We stayed and enjoyed the most fantastic Mozart concert you can imagine.

Join in the evening “paseo” in Italy, Spain and all of southern Europe. Locals stroll and stop to chat with each other. Smile and nod, you might strike up a conversation. Ask the locals where they go for dinner. That small local place can be a real prize even if you can’t read the menu.

Instead of saying “It’s all Greek to me,” get friendly and curious. In a little town in Greece where no one spoke English, we ditched the menu and went into the kitchen…. then we just pointed to what we wanted to eat…. it was absolutely wonderful… and so cheap we thought they had made a mistake on the bill.

Visit a supermarket. It’s fun to see what they’re selling and how they sell it. Look around to see what’s really different and what’s pretty much the same.

Accept invitations. We were invited to visit a local school in Nairobi by some teachers we just happened to meet. When we got to the school, each of the classes had prepared a song or a skit for us. It was a real eye opener when the 2nd graders did a poem about AIDS, but what a wonderful experience we would have missed if we had been shy and said no.

After school we went with the teachers to a local African sports bar. Our safari was wonderful, but the school experience really allowed us to connect with travel and the local culture.

So break out of your shell, try something different, talk to strangers…. really connect with travel.
