What Should You Hope For On A River Nile Cruise

Posted by Rob Atherton | Posted in Travel Desinations | Posted on 13-11-2011

For many years, cruises on the River Nile have been carrying people on a magical journey back in time along this wonderful river. A combination of exploring the wonders of historic Egypt combined with a peaceful journey south from Luxor to Aswan is ever renowned with tourists.

A classic River Nile cruise lasts 7 nights and operate Monday to Monday. Direct flights from United Kingdom bring holidaymakers to Luxor where they are transferred to their cruise vessel to check in. The following morning, the journey into historical Egypt commences with a see to the East Bank of the Nile at Luxor such as the Temples of Karnak and Luxor.

The next morning, the sightseeing heads over to the West Bank of the Nile including the Valley of the Kings just before returning to the boat for lunch. Just after lunch, the cruise boat leaves Luxor heading south for Edfu. Immediately after an overnight mooring at Edfu, there are further trips to temples at both Edfu and Kom Ombo just before continuing to Aswan.

The following morning, its time to check out Aswan and a more advanced structure; the Aswan High Dam. Built in the 1950s, the Aswan High Dam produced Lake Nasser, itself a cruise holiday location. In the afternoon, there is time to sail on a traditional Egyptian Felucca along this very picturesque part of the river. The Cataract Hotel in Aswan overlooks the Nile and it is here that Agatha Christie authored part of her celebrated book, “Death on the Nile”.

Immediately after an overnight stop in Aswan, there is some time available to explore the town or alternatively, there is an optional visit to the impressive Temple of Abu Simbel at the southern end of Lake Nasser. It is quite a distance to Abu Simbel, either 45 minutes by air or three hours but it is worthwhile the time and effort.

Aswan represents the turn-around point for Nile cruises and now the boat heads back north the 80 miles to Luxor. The journey takes a couple of days with an over night stop at Edfu prior to returning to Luxor. The week cruising the River Nile is over and travellers head back to the airport and home.

Nile Cruises are one of the most fantastic ways to experience the ancient sights of Upper Egypt.

Parking In New York City

Posted by John Riley | Posted in Travel Desinations | Posted on 16-09-2011

If you are considering visiting New York City with a car, remember that parking in New York can be a significant challenge. If you do not plan ahead and adhere to some simple rules you’ll be fined, your auto might be towed or you may pay an arm and a leg in parking costs.

Here is a basic overview on NYC parking:

Garages

Hourly fees in NYC garages can cause heavy dents in your budget and in in the middle of town can cost well over $40 an hour.

Keep in mind that you can find coupons for nyc parking on the web and some websites even offer iphone apps that will help you in finding deals on an ad-hoc basis.

There are typically early bird deals for folks that bring their vehicles in the parking garage before 10:00 am.

Often it is a good idea parking in a garage a bit further from where you want to get and take the subway, bus or walk to your destination. For instance, parking garages near Ninth and Tenth Avenue usually charge lower costs than mid town garages and you can find superb deals for the whole day.

If you are moving into New York permanently and have a vehicle, consider signing up for a monthly parking plan.

Monthly deals can run about 300 – 400 dollars a month with quite a few garages charging additional fees for SUV’s, but it is feasible to find less expensive deals.

Street parking

Here is the understatement of the month – Street parking in NYC is tough!!

There are areas in the city it is almost impossible to find an empty space at any time of the day. Regardless of whether you find one – parking meters are expensive and at most places you will need to come back each hour or or so to add more coins or pay more at the parking muni meters

On Sundays meter parking is free of charge.

Anyway always!!! Meticulously read the signs close to where you want to park. Go one or two meters to your left and to your right and ensure you fully understand the sign that applies to your parking space. Figuring out what the various signs mean is complex especially to folks coming to NYC for the first time. If you’re not sure ask. The best folks to ask are policemen or shop owners right near where you are parking.

Check out the NYC DOT parking laws website for more info.

It is also crucial to follow the rules about Alternate Side Parking

During specific days and hours you aren’t permitted to park on certain sides of the streets for cleaning and traffic flow purposes. There are ad hoc radio announcements on the suspension of these rules, sometimes as a consequence of stormy weather like snow, but there also are pre scheduled suspension of the Alternate Side Parking for holidays. You can take a look at the 2011 suspension calendar at the NYC DOT website.

NYC Parking Coupons is a a site that provides info on parking in NYC and offers coupons for parking in NYC
